DIN11864

aseptic connections for maximum hygiene

The DIN 11864 standard series defines aseptic pipe connection systems developed to meet the highest hygienic demands in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, and biotechnology. Introduced in 1998, the DIN 11864 connections are designed to minimize dead space and enable optimal cleanability (CIP/SIP), ensuring sterile and contamination-free processing environments. Their precision-fit components and hygienic sealing concepts make them ideal for critical process applications where product integrity and process safety are paramount.

The series includes three standardized connection types, tailored for sterile process environments:

  • DIN 11864-1: Screwed connections and blind parts
  • DIN 11864-2: Flange connections and blind flanges
  • DIN 11864-3: Clamp connections and blind ferrules

All three types feature extended welding ends to support orbital welding, enabling seamless integration into hygienic piping systems. O-ring-based sealing ensures a secure, hygienic, and leak-free operation.

These precision-engineered connections play a key role in maintaining product integrity and cleanability across sectors such as food, biotech, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Screwed Aseptic Connections

DIN 11864-1 Form A

Defines hygienic screwed connections for sterile process applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. This connection type consists of a male and liner part, both prepared for orbital welding, allowing seamless integration into stainless steel piping systems.

Designed for crevice-free assembly, these components ensure maximum cleanability and hygiene. The sealing is typically achieved with FDA- and USP Class VI-compliant elastomers such as EPDM. Manufactured from corrosion-resistant stainless steel grades like 1.4435 (316L) or 1.4404 (316L), these screwed connections deliver excellent process safety, durability, and compliance with global hygiene standards.

Technical Features and Blind Parts

Blind male and liner parts based on DIN 11853-1 are designed for temporarily sealing aseptic piping systems while maintaining sterility and system integrity. These components are especially useful during system maintenance or process line changes. The sealing surfaces are precision-turned to a surface roughness of Ra < 0.8 µm, supporting hygienic performance and cleanability.

Blind parts are compatible with a wide range of seal materials and can be manufactured from high-grade materials such as titanium or high-alloy stainless steels. To ensure optimal weldability and corrosion resistance, the delta ferrite content is limited to < 1%, particularly beneficial in sensitive weld zones.

Hygienic Flange Connections

DIN 11864-2 Form A

Aseptic flange connections designed for use in sterile and hygienic process environments. The connection consists of a male and female flange, secured by bolts and sealed with an O-ring. This dead-space-free design minimizes the risk of microbial growth and ensures reliable long-term performance.

Manufactured from corrosion-resistant stainless steels such as 1.4435 or 1.4404 (316L), all product-contact surfaces are precision-turned with a surface roughness of Ra < 0.8 µm to meet the highest hygienic standards. These flange connections are ideal for use in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food industries.

Blind Flanges and Technical Properties

DIN 11853-2 standardizes blind male and female flanges designed to safely close off unused process ports while maintaining aseptic integrity. These components are ideal for temporary process interruptions or future system expansions. The sealing system uses elastomers compliant with FDA and USP Class VI, such as EPDM, ensuring hygienic sealing performance in regulated environments.

All blind flanges are compatible with orbital welding processes, offering flexibility in both materials and sealing options — including titanium and high-performance plastics like PTFE or FEP. A delta ferrite content below 1% is maintained across all components to ensure high corrosion resistance, particularly in weld zones.

Hygienic Clamp Connections

DIN 11864-3 Form A

Defines clamp ferrule connections specifically engineered for hygienic and aseptic environments, such as in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries. These connections utilize a clamp mechanism that enables rapid assembly and disassembly, making them ideal for systems that require frequent cleaning, maintenance, or reconfiguration.

Manufactured from high-grade stainless steel (1.4435 / 316L or 1.4404 / 316L), the ferrules offer excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. The precision-turned internal surface with a roughness of Ra < 0.8 µm meets the most demanding hygienic standards, ensuring cleanability and process integrity in sterile applications.

Blind Ferrules and Technical Characteristics

Blind male and female ferrules, based on DIN 11853-3, are designed for the temporary or permanent sealing of pipe ends in hygienic and aseptic process systems. These components ensure sterile conditions are maintained even during system modifications, expansions, or shutdowns.

Sealing is achieved using elastomers that comply with FDA and USP Class VI standards, such as EPDM. For specific application requirements, alternative sealing materials like Viton or FEP-encapsulated O-rings are also available. The ferrules are manufactured from high-grade stainless steel (1.4435 / 316L or 1.4404) and feature precision-turned surfaces with Ra < 0.8 µm, ensuring optimal cleanability and process safety.

Orbital welding ends in accordance with DIN 11866 (lines A, B, C) allow for seamless integration into sterile piping systems. A delta ferrite content of < 1% ensures long-term corrosion resistance and compliance with hygienic standards.
